Their ambition was to create a modern family house that embraced light, openness and a strong connection to the outdoors, while remaining respectful of the qualities that had first attracted them to the site.
Set within the grounds of the client’s existing home, the project presented the challenge of creating a striking contemporary dwelling on a highly sensitive site bordering a cherished public garden within a conservation area.
The design needed to demonstrate that a modern architectural language could sit comfortably alongside its historic surroundings, preserving the character of the village while earning the confidence of both the local community and the planning authority.
The house takes the form of a distinctive three-storey pitched dwelling, its simple silhouette drawing on familiar local building forms while expressing a contemporary architectural language. Clad in handcrafted terracotta, the building celebrates traditional craftsmanship through a modern interpretation, with the richness and texture of the façade changing throughout the day as the light moves across it. The result is a home that is unmistakably contemporary yet deeply rooted in its setting, balancing innovation with heritage to create a timeless family home.
