Our relationship with the client began with his previous house more than ten years ago and has grown into a long-standing collaboration. He is an imaginative, curious and wonderfully exciting client to work with, driven by a desire to create something truly exceptional – not quickly, but beautifully, and to the very highest standard. This estate is very much his life’s work.
At its heart is a 1500s Grade II Listed Hall, carefully restored and extended alongside the conversion of four former dairy barns, labourers cottage guest accommodation, and the creation of three contemporary homes.
The whole estate has been conceived as one carefully considered piece of architecture and landscape, transforming a large cattle farm into a beautiful, working country estate.
The Hall has been painstakingly rescued from severe disrepair, with its historic timber frame, plasterwork and architectural fabric restored alongside specialist craftspeople and conservation experts. New interventions are deliberately quiet and deeply rooted in the landscape, including a substantial leisure and wellness suite tucked into the hillside, with a striking and ambitious swimming pool, spa and terrace overlooking the Cheshire plains.
Perhaps most importantly, this is a project that has been allowed to evolve slowly.
Every stone, timber detail, garden and junction has been considered, challenged, grown and refined. There has been no rush to finish – only a determination to get it right.
And, amongst all the seriousness of rescuing a sixteenth-century hall and creating an estate for generations to come, there has also been room for the occasional outrageous idea, a party bar-n, a speak easy style wine cellar and a little architectural mischief and plenty of fun along the way.
The result is a deeply personal country estate: historic, handcrafted and quietly extraordinary – a place made not simply to live in, but to leave behind.
